2016 in Media Consumption

The totals:

  • 37 books vs 64 last year.
  • 55 new movies (plus several re-watches) vs 57 last year. More or less flat.
  • 41 TV series completed — either finished them in 2016, watched the whole show, or watched a new season — along with endless political coverage, many nightly news shows, drop-ins on Emma’s shows (like Supergirl and Project Runway), and the Olympics. I counted this differently this year — last year I didn’t count new seasons of shows I’d already watched.
  • 55 bands live vs 65 in 2015. Steadily declining.
  • 246 new records (plus innumerable re-listens) vs 600 in 2015
  • As last year, I read some 50+ ad economics research papers, but I’m not listing those here. Probably have about one more year of that for work on the book. The source list for my next book is now 142 items long, and that’s just the ones referenced in the manuscript so far.
  • And one play: Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. Edit: My wife reminded me we also saw the Gillian Anderson/Ben Foster production of A Streetcar Named Desire at St Ann’s Warehouse. Whoops.

Thoughts

Unlike 2015, I wasn’t spending the bulk of 2016 listening to as many new albums as possible. I also watched less TV, saw (a few) fewer movies, and read (a few) fewer books. Down numbers all around. Not coincidentally to all the numbers being down, I worked a lot more this year.

I didn’t enjoy doing this nearly as much this year as I did last year. It’s exhausting. You miss things. You have to constantly remember to jot things down.

Didn’t come anywhere near my annual goal of a book a week, mainly because I took 2016 to plow through two large books I’ve been wanting to read: Robert Caro’s The Power Broker and Eric Barnouw’s Tower of Babel: History of Broadcasting in the United States Volume 1: to 1933 (thank you Dorothy McGivney Tim Hwang for the recommendations). I probably won’t hit it again in 2017 as I have it in my head to finally tackle Infinite Jest, the next two parts of Barnouw’s history and part one of Caro’s LBJ series. I might be able to make it up with shorter, smaller books throughout the year. I probably could have pulled it off this year if Bostrom’s Superintelligence didn’t bog me down for a month.

The number of bands seen live is ridiculously low for someone who used to see 300+ bands a year for many years. But I did get to see some old favorites for the first time: Faust, Bob Dylan, Sad Lovers and Giants. And I saw many old favorites again: Peter Hook, Guided by Voices, Silver Apples, The Dandy Warhols, Howard Jones, Mercury Rev, Blanck Mass, Metric, Yeasayer, Ex Hex. Some new favorites included Hinds, Charlie XCX, and Richard Pinhaus.

I think it’s funny 2016 started and ended with Star Wars novels.

Will I do this again next year? Yeah, I think so. The podcasts are uninteresting. Not the listening — they’re great — but the listing. Maybe I won’t do those next year? I don’t know. I guess I have 48 hours to decide. It’s exhausting, but I do find myself going back and looking at the lists with some regularity.

2016 Favorites

Everything here is chronologically ranked.

Books: Money’s Nothing by Lisa Crystal Carver, Lost Stars by Claudia Grey, A Tower of Babel by Eric Barnouw, One White Face by Hillary Corna, Consider Phlebas by Iain M Banks, The Power Broker by Robert Caro.

Movies (Features): Midnight Special, Zootopia, Safety Not Guaranteed, One More Time With Feeling (this was so staged I can’t consider it a documentary), Arrival, and Moana. I still haven’t seen a few of the “contenders” and hope to get a few of those out of the way this week. Honestly, nothing this year was PERFECT.

Movies (Noble Effort): The Neon Demon, The Shallows, The Lobster, Roue One and Passengers.

Movies (Documentary): Lo and Behold: Reveries from a Connected World, Weiner, and Richard Linklater: Dream is Destiny. All three of these, in contrast to the features, are nearly perfect.

Albums (2016): David Bowie — “Blackstar,” Daughter — “Not to Disappear,” Kanye — “Life of Pablo” (sorry), Rihanna — “Anti,” School of Seven Bells — “SVIIB,” Daddy Issues — “Can We Still Hang?” Underworld — “Barbara, Barbara, We Face a Shining Future,” Sturgill Simpson — “Metamodern Sounds in Country Music,” Car Seat Headrest — “Teens of Denial,” Minor Victories — “Minor Victories” Paul Simon — “Stranger to Stranger,” Wye Oak — “Tween,” Ben Salisbury & Geoff Barrow — “Ex Machina Soundtrack,” Blood Orange — “Freetown Sound,” Angel Olsen — “My Woman,” Kacey Musgraves — “Spotify Sessions,” Carly Rae Jepsen — “Emotion Side B,” Haley Bonar — “Impossible Dream,” Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds — “Skeleton Tree” Mitski — “Puberty 2,” How to Dress Well — “Care,” Bon Iver — “22, A Million,” Jenny Hval — “Blood Bitch” Dawes — “We’re All Gonna Die,” Psychic TV — “Alienist,” Waxahatchee — “Ivy Trip,” Anohi — “Hopelessness,” Leonard Cohen — “You Want it Darker,” Radio Dept — “Running out of Love,” Cerrone — “Red Lips,” and Tindersticks — “The Waiting Room.”

Albums (previously released but I just listened to them): Jawbreaker — “Bivouac,” Sunburned Hand of the Man — “Wedlock,” Savages — “Adore Life,” Clint Mansell — “Black Swan Soundtrack,” Glenn Campbell — “Ghost on the Canvas,” Codeine — “What About The Lonely?” Thalia Zydek — “Liars and Prayers,” Rivulets — “I Remember Everything,” Waxahatchee — “Early Recordings,” Sun City Girls — “Torch of the Mystics,” Mitski — “Bury Me at Makeout Creek,” Brad Laner — “Nearest Suns,” Chris Brokaw — “Now Forager,” The National — “A Lot of Sorrow,” Bedhead — New Box Set, The Books — “The Lemon of Pink,” and Nina Simone — “Nina Simone Sings the Blues.”

TV SERIES: Stranger Things, The 100, Fargo, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Documentary Now, People of Earth, Preacher, Ascension (shame that got cancelled), Bojack Horseman, The Fall, and Dirk Gentley’s Holistic Detective Agency.
