2018 in Media

Rough totals: 260 albums, 20 live acts (so sad), 55 new movies, 31 TV series, 65 books.

This is about the tenth year I’ve kept this list in one form or another. You can also check out the 2017 list, 2016 list, 2015 list. Before that they were on LJ and that shit is locked so deep it’ll never be found. Except by the Russians.

Changes from last year: 140 or so fewer albums, 25 fewer live acts, 20 fewer new movies, one more book, 8 fewer tv series. Less media consumption in general.

And, of course, I have a weekly podcast where I go over my media consumption (along with other mundane aspects of being alive).

Thoughts:

  • Having a baby makes it hard to keep up on media. Recorded music and books are easier because I can do those while traveling and (with music) working.
  • My taste in movies is getting worse as I get older. I’m definitely leaning towards more escapist movies given our political climate. I used to watch difficult and arty films almost exclusively. Now many of them are too painful. Having a kid enhances this. Roma almost killed me.
  • By contrast my reading seems to be going more in-depth into things related to our current political climate. Books on the environment, politics, the economy, other challenging times in history. This started last year but has continued.
  • Even though I started a podcast, I don’t listen to many podcasts anymore. One-off interviews with people whose careers I’m following, but not whole series. This is a result of my change in approach to weight loss, which is more diet-focused and less focused on long, 10 mile walks every day, which I don’t have time for anyhow what with this baby and job.
  • I am super into 30 minute television dramas, though I can only think of one: Homecoming. If you know of any more, let me know. I’m finding most TV shows draw in the middle. Sabrina was great fun but every episode was way too long.
  • I still love movies more than television, because the story ends. Though this is proving less true in the era of cinematic universes.
  • Every year I say this exercise was tedious and I don’t want to do it anymore, but then I do it again, and I suspect that’ll be the same for next year.
  • It’d be cool if Siri or Alexa were so good you could say to them “yo go through this list and add links to Spotify for the music with Bandcamp as a backup and Worldcat for the books, and IMDB for the movies” and it just worked. How many years do you think it’ll be before that works? Two? Ten? Twenty? I’m betting ten to twenty. Hell, right now Google still can’t tell you accurately how to watch a movie online. When you type it in, let alone speak it.
  • It would be cool if you googled moviename+online Google actually gave you every option. But they don’t. Go ahead and Google “Mandy Online.” You get a nice little box that looks like it gives you all the options, but it doesn’t.
This box is the top result. It is not a search result. It is an ad. Mandy is also available on Hoopla, iTunes, and Sony Playstation. Cool, Google.

Books

Research papers and government documents are included if they are over 100 pages. I include comic books if the typewritten text totals over 100 pages (I use a draft Sandman script published in the back of a Sandman anthology as a comic-page-to-typewritten-page conversion metric). I aim for 52 books a year — one a week. Hit 65 this year. Books recommended for the layperson have an asterisk.

Recorded Music

Live Music

Live music used to be a huge part of my life — I’ve seen over 4,000 separate performances, and have them neurotically listed. This year was verrrry light. BUT, I do focus mainly on going to shows of acts I’ve never seen before, so I do end up catching a decent number of pretty memorable shows.

Movies

Movies have taken a tumble since having a baby, but I try and keep up on video, going very rarely to the theater, and my Christmas holiday marathon, which was back this year. Movies with an asterisk are recommended. Movies listed here are only movies I saw for the first time. In addition I rewatched about 50 or so, listed in the master list below. Recommended films have an asterisk. Total was 57 new movies, just over one a week. Surprised I made that. The year-end marathon saved me.
