2019 Media Consumption and Picks.

Previous lists: 2018, 2017, 2016, 2015

The totals: 58 books, 31 by women for 53%. 295 Albums. 37 live acts. 62 movies. 26 TV Series.

Changes from last year: -7 books, +26% on proportion of books read by women. +35 albums over last year. +17 Live Acts. +7 movies. -5 TV Series.

And, of course, I have a weekly podcast where I go over my media consumption (along with other mundane aspects of being alive).

Thoughts:

  • Media consumption seems to be rebounding some more from the early baby days, except TV. Watching less TV.
  • Reading books mainly written by women is difficult but not impossible. There are many instances like She Said vs Catch and Kill where there might be a few books about a topic. Pick the one by a woman. Easy. It’s also a super useful heuristic when trying to pick a book on a topic you know nothing about (thank you, Annmarie Hauck Walsh). The hardest is reading “that book” — one everyone says you HAVE to read, and it’s not written by a woman. Especially older ones since, even moreso historically, women didn’t get as many chances to be the one who wrote the book on a topic. Still, it’s eminently doable, and I’m going to keep it up.
  • It drives me crazy that you can’t watch all of the “best films of the year” before the end of the year. Among the movies that haven’t come here yet: 1917, Portrait of a Lady on Fire, Dark Water. And I still have to see Little Women in the the theater and catch up on the ones I missed because they were only in my local cinema for a week: Pain and Glory, Harriet, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, Where’d You Go Bernadette?
  • HOWEVER, this is the first year that I — using the Golden Globes noms as a guide — have had such a plethora of streaming films that I can just watch at home. Marriage Story, The Two Popes, Dolomite is My Name, The Report. That has been really nice.
  • Still completely obsessed with half-hour shows, especially half-hour non-comedies, so thank you Mandalorian, but also Fleabag and others.
  • I was never happier the week that I got to be watching The Mandalorian and Watchmen. It literally cheered me up, physically. That’s never happened before.
  • Every year I say this exercise was tedious and I don’t want to do it anymore, but then I do it again, and I suspect that’ll be the same for next year.

Books

Research papers and government documents are included if they are over 100 pages. I include comic books if the typewritten text totals over 100 pages (I use a draft Sandman script published in the back of a Sandman anthology as a comic-page-to-typewritten-page conversion metric). I aim for 52 books a year — one a week. Hit 58 this year. Books recommended for the layperson have an asterisk.

This year I set out to have over half the books I read be written by a woman. I got a little worried that with all of the government documents, anthologies, and books edited by one person by written by many that I’d have to split hairs over what a book written by a woman meant, but luckily we hit 31 books clearly written by women without splitting hairs, so, yay. It paid off, as last year I was barely over 25% of books written by women.

Live Music, Lectures, etc.

Live music used to be a huge part of my life — I’ve seen over 4,000 separate performances, and have them neurotically listed. This year was verrrry light. But I did better than last year! Progress! Can see the light at the end of the 18-year long tunnel on parenting. Jane went to her first show this year, too, which was exciting. She saw the Spinanes at the Merge 30 Festival.

Movies

Movies with an asterisk are recommended. Movies listed here are only movies I saw for the first time. In addition I rewatched about 50 or so, listed in the master list below. Recommended films have an asterisk. The Dagger † are films I saw in the theater. Total was 62 new movies, better than one a week. Surprised I made that. The year-end marathon saved me.

Because I see most of the “best of” the year films in January, I’ll save my Best-of film list till right before the Oscars.

Television

While most of my media consumption seems on the rise since the birth of my daughter two years ago, TV is on the decline. We only have an hour or so most nights after Jane goes to bed, and we don’t watch too much TV when she’s awake. Plus politics. But we endeavor to keep up, since my wife works in Television and all. We did manage to get a few shows in during the year. Recommended ones have an asterisk.

The below are shows I completed at least a seasons’ worth:

  • Barry
  • *Adventure Time (seasons 1–5)
  • Dr Who
  • *The Orville
  • *The Good Place
  • The Magicians
  • *Doll
  • *The Crown (Season 1, at least)
  • Broadchurch
  • This Giant Beast that is the Global Economy
  • *After Life
  • *Future Man
  • *Game of Thrones
  • Marvel’s Agents of Shield
  • *Fleabag
  • Good Omens
  • *Chernobyl
  • Star Trek Discovery
  • GLOW
  • What We Do in The Shadows
  • *The Boys
  • Great British Baking Show
  • Saturday Night Live
  • Democratic Primary Presidential Debates
  • *Watchmen
  • *The Mandalorian
