2020 Media Consumption and Picks

Previous lists: 2019, 2018, 2017, 2016, 2015

The totals: 30 books. 575 Albums. 3 live acts. 57 movies. 39 TV Series.

Changes from last year: -30 books, +462 albums over last year. -34 Live Acts. -6 movies. +13 TV Series.

And, of course, I have a weekly podcast where I go over my media consumption (along with other mundane aspects of being alive).

Thoughts

  • Yeah 2020 can go screw
  • I miss movies in theaters so much. And quality new movies. Thusly I watched fewer movies this year, though not as fewer as I thought. Made a lot of it up with oldies and re-watches.
  • I’m not sure where to post comedy specials because I didn’t use to watch them but now I do I guess so I’m calling them movies.
  • Book reading really took a hit during the pandmic and I am sad about it and miss it. Doomscrolling is not an adequate replacement.
  • My god I listened to a lot of music this year. My starred tracks for the year numbered just over 1,200. In 2019 it was 639.
  • I’m relentlessly bitter I haven’t seen Promising Young Woman yet.
  • The loss of live music is the most painful media thing of the year for me.
  • I wrote this last year: “Every year I say this exercise was tedious and I don’t want to do it anymore, but then I do it again, and I suspect that’ll be the same for next year.” I say it again this year. Doubly so.

Books

Research papers and government documents are included if they are over 100 pages. I include comic books if the typewritten text totals over 100 pages (I use a draft Sandman script published in the back of a Sandman anthology as a comic-page-to-typewritten-page conversion metric). I aim for 52 books a year — one a week. Didn’t even come close this year. Books recommended for the layperson have an asterisk.

Recorded Music

Listened to roughly 575 albums and EPs this year. Here are my favorites, very quickly culled by running through the list once and pasting the ones here that stuck with me. Especially beloved ones are starred. There is a playlist of my favorite songs from 2020 on Spotify. It is very long. There was a lot of music this year. Music kept me sane. Thank you, musicians, for making awesome shit even as the world mostly abandoned you.

My vote for the top three albums of the year: Fetch the Bolt Cutters, by Fiona Apple, “May Our Chambers Be Full” by Emma Ruth Rundle and Thou and “Every Bad” by Porridge Radio.

Live Music, Lectures, etc.

Live music used to be a huge part of my life — I’ve seen over 4,000 separate performances, and have them neurotically listed. This year was the worst. I saw one show, three bands: A punk show at Local 506 in Chapel Hill. Old Boston legends and friends Doc Hopper plus two others: Almost People and Loose Behavior. It was a great night. My friend Nick came from Wilmington. We had Bud Light Seltzers with Chris from Doc Hopper. We resolved to go to more shows. That didn’t work out.

Movies

Movies with an asterisk are recommended. Movies listed here are only movies I saw for the first time. In addition I rewatched about 20 or so, listed in the master list below. Recommended films have an asterisk. The Dagger † are films I saw in the theater. All three of them.

Because I see most of the “best of” the year films in January, I’ll save my Best-of film list till right before the Oscars.
